Time out!

Monday, July 18th, 2005

I was so stressed on Saturday. Jeremy has been working long hours putting in or fixing computer networks in different school systems while they are on school break. He had to work on Saturday as well. He got home about 4:00 pm just as I was starting to fix dinner. As soon as dinner was done, I put him in charge and left. I just had to have a Mommy time out. I went to Dairy Queen with Sherlock Holmes and got some food and a drink. After a while of reading, I called and talked to my Dad. It really helped, plus I got a nice blizzard before leaving, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups with chocolate ice cream. Yum!

I could see a difference in my attitude when I got home. Amie’s new scooter (that James had ridden without her knowledge) and Christine’s tricycle were sitting right where I needed to park. Instead of getting very angry with them (as I would have before leaving) I just calmly told James and Christine to put them away. They are supposed to put them away when they are done playing with them, but you know kids. Actually, Amie has been doing a good job of taking care of her new scooter, probably since she bought it herself.

Anyway, I think I’ll do that every once in a while. Mr. Holmes and Dr. Watson are nice companions and I just have to get some down time somedays.

Want to know what the kids did yesterday? Take a look!

In the afternoon while it was raining, I draped the floor in strips of newsprint paper and got out crayons. I gave Amie and James the job of illustrating “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” Christine did some drawings which she claims to be from the story too. All of the kids were down on the floor coloring. Ok, so Noelle enjoyed crawling over it and hearing the crinkle, crinkle instead of coloring, but she did a few marks of her own. Here comes Mr. Wonka. (Amie) and there he goes with Charlie, Grandpa Joe, and the 4 other kids behind the gates of the factory (James.) I didn’t want to put on the other pictures because they show stuff that happen in the story and if you haven’t read it (or seen it), I don’t want to spoil it for you. We only have three chapters left to read and we’ll probably get to those today. They’ve left a little free space on their papers to draw the ending of the story.

I hope this new movie goes better with the book. I didn’t see the other movie until we bought it for the kids 2 years ago and I was very disappointed. Amie and James are really wanting to see the new one, but I don’t know if we can. Our van needed some expensive repairs recently and it puts us in a bind concerning entertainment that costs.

Oh to be a kid again!

Yesterday was one of those nice drizzly summer days. It wasn’t extremely hot and it had small showers off and on all day. I sent Amie and James outside to play during naptime. I figured they’d stay up on the porch with the play kitchen because I didn’t think they would go out into the rain. When I looked out to check on them a little later, there they were dancing and running around in the rain. As soon as they saw me, they ran up onto the porch because they didn’t know it was okay for them to be out there. I told them I wouldn’t have sent them out if it was a thunder storm and I didn’t mind them playing in the drizzle. They would get a little damp, then the rain would stop and they’d dry off. It only rained for a few minutes at a time and they just had a lot of fun. The only bad thing (and it wasn’t very bad at all) that happened was when Christine went out after waking and stepped straight into a puddle. Her sock is now quite dirty.

Nervous habits

Thursday, July 14th, 2005

Sometimes you don’t realize you have a nervous habit until it hurts. I have found two. One, I push my hair back, more so when I’m agitated at something. Two, I rub my forehead. At the moment, my boo-boo from yesterday makes both of those actions hurt. You can’t see a bruise and the little place where it was bleeding is up at my hairline, so it isn’t easy to see either, but it feels as if most of the right frontal eminance is sore and tender. (Look that one up if you don’t remember your anatomy lessons from high school. LOL)

Whack!

Well, I’ve got a nice piece of my head missing. Ok, so it’s not really that big. I was rearranging the videos and DVDs so they weren’t ready to fall over and dropped one. Bent over to retrieve it and hit my forehead on the corner of a dresser. I didn’t realize it was an open sore until after I’d put ice on it. I pulled the ice away and saw a little blood. I think the ice helped slow any bleeding and since I got it on so fast, it didn’t bleed near as much as many head injuries. A small hole up near my hairline has been covered with a liquid bandage. Thankfully, my bangs should cover it up. I took some pain meds, but I can still feel a low throbbing. I think I need to rest some while the kids nap now.

On a good note, I found a lot of sock pairs that I’d been missing while doing some cleaning. The kids now have plenty of socks again. Some of the socks had been put into a plastic bag until the other one showed up in the wash (usually I find them within a day) and had somehow been stuffed back behind and under where we keep the videos. I’ve been missing these for at least a month if not two. I was wondering where they’d been put.

Yay, I’m back!

Don’t ask me what went wrong. I have no idea. I’m just glad I have my site back.

Noelle has graduated!

Thursday, July 7th, 2005

She is a “Toddler” now. *Sigh* No more baby. She walks so much now. She still crawls if she wants to get somewhere fast, but most of the time she’s up on those feet. She doesn’t go more than 8 or 10 steps usually without falling on her backside, but that doesn’t stop her. Since she is still wobbly on her legs and is a tiny thing I get lots of comments. I was asked this last weekend if she was a year old yet. I laughed and told them she was 18 months. People are always amazed at how old she is, but if they hear her talking, they wouldn’t be. Or maybe they would since many kids don’t speak like this until they are closer to 2, I think. She’s speaking in sentences sometimes and very clearly. Here are a few of the ones we’ve heard… (Sitting on Daddy’s lap)”Hey Daddy, That’s Momma!” (Watching me play a computer game)”Those are balls.” (No comments necessary on next two)”That’s mine.” “Where’s Grandma?” I know I’m a bit biased, but I think her mental skills are very well developed. Her fine motor skills are about where they should be for her age and her large motor skills are where they should be if you factor in her premature birth. I can see her get frustrated sometimes because her motor skills aren’t well enough to let her do what she wants to do in her mind. It doesn’t stop her from trying though.

Some accidents here

We played with some of the sparklers yesterday. I have a bucket of water to put them in when they are done. James went to put one in the bucket and missed. While searching, he stepped on it. He had a blister on the bottom of his foot and it burst. I got it all bandaged up last night. He was a brave boy and didn’t cry or yell when I was washing it out though I could tell he was in pain. He had lots of trouble going to sleep until I gave him some tylenol.

This morning, I was getting AnnaBeth and Noelle dressed when I heard a big thud and Grandma Anna start calling for help. She had fallen. We had two fire and rescue men out to help get her up and out to the car. Jeremy’s mom took her to the dr for x-rays and tests to find out why she is getting dizzy. I’ll update when I know more.

Update: Thankfully, Grandma Anna doesn’t have any broken bones. The dr took her off of her blood pressure medicine since he thinks her blood pressure is getting too low and that is causing her dizziness. Also, we’re making her put a small oxygen tank on her walker. When she’s at her chair, she is able to breath with the O2 concentrator, but when she’s out of her chair, she didn’t have anything until today. We are having her use that small tank when she’s up and about.

They’ve messed up poor Roald Dahl’s book

Tuesday, July 5th, 2005

They got a different illustrator. The copyright for Quentin Blake’s illustrations is 1998. Roald Dahl died in 1990. I don’t think he would have been happy with this. First, they left out one of the pictures Mr. Dahl had the original illustrator put in there. It is essential to the story. If you read a pre-Blake book, you will know what I am talking about. The picture they left out is right after they introduce the family. The book reads, “Grandpa Joe and Grandma Josephine on this side, Grandpa George and Grandma Georgina on this side.” There is supposed to be a picture of the bed with the four grandparents in it there and each section of the sentence is supposed to be under the correct side of the bed. Without the picture, that sentence almost needs to be changed to “on the right (or left) side.” Mr. Dahl wrote the book intending to have that certain picture there. There are a few other illustrations I miss or that have been changed that I’m not happy with. I miss seeing Prince Pondicherry in his melted chocolate house. Augustus Gloop isn’t drawn as chubby or like the description of “great flabby folds of fat” like the old version. I’ve only read up to Charlie’s birthday, so it isn’t very far into the book yet, but I’m sure there will be other illustrations I think they ought to have put in or some that aren’t as Mr. Dahl described them in the book.

My kids are really enjoying the story though and I guess that’s all that really matters. They don’t want to wait until nighttime to hear it. They want it read at least twice a day. Today, I read some before lunch and I’ll read some more later. We’ll be finished with the book pretty quickly. Amie wants to read it to herself when I’m done.

Happy 4th!!

The bad news is no fireworks here. It rained a ton and I accidently left the window down on the van, so it is soaked. I’m not driving it tonight. Also, the ground is soaked and we’d have to stay standing the whole time. I know my kids would complain about that. I refuse to let them take their lawn chairs since I’d end up carrying 3 or 4 of them and my shoulder that I had surgery on last year has been bothering me a little yesterday and today. I think I carried Noelle a bit too long on Saturday.

The good thing is that we have sparklers. We did a few last night and will try to do some more tomorrow. That helps the kids overcome the disappointment of no big fireworks.

As for the rain… WOW! It was a horrible storm. Many trees were knocked down all over the town. After it was over (it only lasted about half an hour), I took a walk around our tiny village to see if I could find where the power outage originated. It was really neat. Neighbors were helping each other cut the downed branches. Families were out playing, grilling, or just taking a walk together. A bunch of people had met at the one open gas station to chat. The two nice older owners were doing business, except gas, with the wife figuring out everyone’s purchases in her head. She was really quick at it. I found the downed line being worked on. It was the main line into town and had a huge branch over it. It took them about 4 hours to get power back on. In the meantime, we got out “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” by Roald Dahl and started reading it. We bought it this weekend especially for a nice family time and this seemed like a good time to begin.
