Pre-Dance Recital

Saturday, May 13th, 2006

The busiest weekend of the year for me, it seems.  The youth lock-in last night was a lot of fun, but that is for a different post.

Getting Amie and AnnaBeth ready for their recital isn’t hard, but it does take a lot of time.  I have to make sure their outfits are ready.  Today, that meant doing a quick hand washing of Amie’s pink hose and throwing them in the dryer.  I have to fix their hair.  Amie has to have a bun high on the back of her head with no wispies coming out and a flower put in front of it.  AnnaBeth has two ponytails which I make sure are nicely curled and a headband with two bobby pins to help hold it in place.  Their hair alone takes a good hour to do, making sure it is nice and smooth.  Those little bumps come up so easily.  I use mousse to help it get that way and then for Amie, I use hairspray afterwards to help keep those wispies from forming.  Next, they get into their outfits and I fix their make-up.  I have to admit, it is fun making up my little girls and they enjoy it as well.  It is a special event and they don’t ever get to wear make-up at other times.  Just before leaving the house, I make sure they each have their backpack with their ballet slippers, a toy or two, a bottle of water, the make-up and extra bobby pins, and for the performance that we don’t go to see, my cellphone for Amie to use when the recital is done.  Then we get into the van and drive the half mile to the theater (since it is raining, if it was nice, we’d walk) and I drop Amie off at the door and let her go to the room where she waits and I take AnnaBeth up to her room.  That is when I am done and have to leave them in the capable hands of their teachers and chaperones and hope they don’t mess up their hair, make-up, or outfit.  I’ll tell you about the actual recital after we see it tomorrow.  I’m excited to see it.  I can’t wait to see how AnnaBeth does in the actual performance.

Update on ABA

Thursday, May 11th, 2006

Thank you, Sue and Phisch, for commenting on whether or not I should become an author at A Blog Apart.  I’ve decided to try it.  Today was my least busy day this week, as you all can see from my previous post, (still didn’t make it to the library)  so I posted my introduction post over there.  Anyway, I’m going to see if I can come up with enough stuff that isn’t about my kids to post there.

What Do You Think?

Saturday, May 6th, 2006

I was asked to become an author at A Blog Apart. I’m not sure if I have the right material for it though. I feel like all I ever talk about is the kids and that wouldn’t work over there. What do you all think? Do I come up with enough other stuff to do that? Feedback would be welcome for this. Thank you.

Oh, and before I go… Noelle is so funny. We played Hide and Seek and then Sardines today. For the first Hide and Seek, she helped me find everyone and then on the second game, she hid with me. She was very good at being quiet, but I couldn’t close the door with her in there with me. Anyway, after that, she was running around trying to hide as well. When we played Sardines (one person hides, then each of the other people go at intervals to find that person and hide with them, in the end, we’re usually packed all together like a package of sardines) she was having fun hiding with whoever was the first person out, but she would get all excited whenever another person found them and squeal, so it wasn’t hard to find the hiding place. It was really fun. We also had a tickle-fest and Kung Fu sparring tonight, so all in all, I got a good amount of exercise.

Amie has her first pimple, an itty bitty one on her nose… and she’s proud of it.  She said it means she’s not a little girl anymore.  Yeah, I know, but I want little girls.  Can’t I keep them little?  Please?

Library Videos

Friday, May 5th, 2006

Ahhh, videos for free.  On our library day on Tuesdays, I’ve allowed the kids to get two videos.  They are only allowed out for two days, so on Thursday, I walk back to the library and drop them off after Jeremy comes home.  (The only time I can walk fast, because of no kids with me.)  Well, last night, I took an empty case with me.  I forgot to put the video back in it.  That happens all the time, the librarian assured me, so she just renewed it for me.  Well, since I had it for a few more days, I went ahead and got two more videos.  Noelle was wanting a video with a small blue dog who plays with clues anyway, so she was pretty happy when I came home with it.  The kids have asked to get a video about a hispanic explorer girl named Dora next time.  See, no need to pay for cable TV here.  I can get all the shows they like at the library.

Special Delivery

Thursday, May 4th, 2006

I have a friend, Kim, who is having her third daughter today. Please pray for her and the baby. She is being induced because her blood pressure went up way too high yesterday. I can’t wait to see the pictures. Her other two daughters are so beautiful and I know this one will be as well.

Edit:  Oh wow!  She has some birth story if you are interested in it.  Baby Tori came with no problems at all.  I can’t tell it like her, so if you want, just go on over and read it yourself and offer congratulations.

Any One Around?

Wednesday, May 3rd, 2006

I need a girls’ night out. Anyone up for it? Oh, wait… I think none of you live close enough. *sigh* Oh, well.

Cheeky Robin

Wednesday, May 3rd, 2006

We have this one robin who likes our backyard. There isn’t a lot of grass because it is landscaped. He likes being able to find the worms so easily, I think. He is slightly larger than the other robins and yells at them if they come into our yard. As long as we don’t come within about 5 feet of him, he doesn’t care if we’re out there. Noelle likes to stand at the kitchen window while I’m doing the dishes in the morning. She yells out the open window, “I see you, Cheeky! I see you!” (I think she’s heard me say quite often, “There’s that cheeky robin.”) Anyway, he just cocks his head and looks up at the window and then goes back to looking for worms. It doesn’t bother him one bit. Because of her though, all the kids have started calling him Cheeky. Oh, and here is a picture of our backyard and the back of our house, if you want to see.

Insect Quiz

Wednesday, May 3rd, 2006

James picked up a paper from the library yesterday that says, “Harriet Honeybee’s Insect Quiz.” I decided to take it.

  1. Name the three parts of an insect.  The front, middle, and end
  2. Are bees cold-blooded animals? I guess they are since they don’t care WHO they sting
  3. Bees make honey from ______ . Shhhh… we’re not supposed to talk about the birds and the bees.
  4. What is the hard outer covering of a bee called? The outside, as opposed to the inside which we find on our windshields.
  5. Who is the leader of a bee colony and lays the eggs? It depends. Is it a democracy, dictatorship, or a monarchy?
  6. How many legs does a bee have? As many as they need
  7. A bee smells with a pair of long feelers called _______ . those pointy head things.
  8. What happens when an older hive gets too large? It falls out of the tree.
  9. Where do mining bees dig their tunnels? Wherever they feel like it.
  10. How do bees communicate with each other? Using Bee slang
  11. What color is it impossible for bees to see? The one they run into
  12. Bees have baskets on their back legs to hold _______ . Their groceries.
