Children’s Christmas Program ‘06

Sunday, December 10th, 2006

The older kids had their Christmas program tonight.  It was so cute.  It was a lot of work.  Two of the kids dropped out at the last minute and a few of the other kids had some parts that were too big for them to really remember, so this last month, Amie picked up a solo part and a trio part without a lot of time to practice.  The solo part she had down very well.  The trio part she got last week and we worked very hard on it.  Tonight before the program, I took her and the two other girls (one of them was also a last minute substitute) to work on that part.  The program went very well even with all the problems they had to work through beforehand.  The boy with a solo just before James was off by half a measure which made James completely miss his solo.  He was extremely upset during the rest of that song, but he got all his spoken lines in very well, so he was okay by the end of the program.  I was proud of his comeback.

I really enjoyed watching it.  It’s so much fun seeing all those kids who have worked so hard do that.

Date Night!

Saturday, December 9th, 2006

The kids are at Jeremy’s parents’ house for the night and Jeremy and I have had a little time out tonight.  Now I think we’re going to try and find a good movie here at home and settle down to watch.  Talk to ya later!

Sign Language

Thursday, December 7th, 2006

Some of you who have known me for a while know that I have always been interested in sign language. When I was young, I was given a book to show the signs and I used it quite a lot. My sister and I enjoyed pretending that I couldn’t hear sometimes and she would talk and use some signs and I would sign back to her. It was fun. In college, I met Michelle and she showed me some more signs and we took a class at a church in signing some of the church songs. Jeremy did that with us as well. I’ve used it often since then so I wouldn’t forget, but it wasn’t enough to have a really good conversation with someone though I could converse a bit.

Recently, there had been some talk at church of having me teach a sign language class for anyone interested. I refused this time because I don’t know enough, but I did teach the babies in the nursery for the last 11 or 12 weeks some of the signs like please, thank you, more, help, excuse me, mommy, daddy, milk, cookie, hungry, and all done. It was a whole lot of fun.

For my own education, I have been looking up words as I want to know them on the internet. As I was looking up some words on the American Sign Language University (ASLU) site, I found that they offer free lessons for people like me who just want to learn. The first lesson is mostly signs I learned long ago, but some have changed in that time, so it’s always good to make sure I am still up to date on the signs. The lessons that ASLU has to offer are what they have for college credit too though you have to register and pay for that, so it is a good course. The only thing different is that I don’t have the CDs to use for reference, but I think most of it is on the site, so I don’t think it will be a problem. So far, I’m finding it fun and interesting. The nice part of taking the free lesson is that I don’t have to do the research paper, though I can if I want. What do you all think? You want me to do a small research paper on something that has to do with sign language and put it on here? I don’t know if I’d want to do one as big as what is required for the paid course, but I might like to do a small one to help me with my understanding of the deaf community.

I’ve added some links.  I’ll talk about the ASLU one soon.

Multi-Tasking

Yesterday, after two cups of coffee, I was so hyped up.  I was browsing the internet, talking on IM to one friend, signing our Christmas cards, and for a little while was talking on the phone to another friend.

A Great Testimony

Tuesday, December 5th, 2006

My friend, Melody, has been commenting here for a few months now. She gave me her blog link and I found her testimony on there. It is so powerful. It is more about the struggles she’s had since she became a Christian. I remember so much of what she went through, but when I read it all together on there, it really hit me. I met her during the beginning of our sophomore year of college and I was her roommate during the first semester of our junior year. Jeremy and I were part of the ministry team helping Aaron at the church as well. It was the start, for me, of really learning what ministry is about.

Go, read it. You will be blessed.

Birthday Greetings

Go tell my brother-in-law Happy Birthday, whether for his real birthday today or his spiritual one yesterday or even both.  Oh, and while you are there, make sure you read his posts.  He has some good ones.

Power Out

Sunday, December 3rd, 2006

My sister, Jill, as well as her husband and two girls have been out of power in their St. Louis home since Friday.  They have been staying with her mother-in-law, but it isn’t home and the girls are off of their routine, so it’s a little rough.

Say prayers for them as well as all the other people who have been affected by these power outages.  There is a town near where we live that has had some of it’s neighborhoods without power since Friday as well.

Hello!

Christmas Tree Decorated

Friday, December 1st, 2006

We let the kids do most of it.  Jeremy just helped James and Christine get the lights on.  There are a few places I may move a few ornaments around.  I did some last night after the kids went to bed because all of the ones Noelle put on were put on about three or four branches.

Noelle has been playing with some of them.  Not taking them off of the tree, just playing with them.  We have a few wooden rocking horses and one that is Big Bird playing a drum, so she just touches them a little and then talks to herself making up some story about them.  Quite funny.
