Update on my Dad’s Parents

November 30th, 2010

My grandfather died yesterday. This man gave me a camera when I was 12. He’d give me film and develop it for me. He showed me how to make a picture from a slide. I loved learning how to manipulate the pictures to put different special effects on it. Much harder than it is now with things digitized, but it was fun.

My grandma isn’t doing well. Last night, my aunt made the decision to hospitalize her. She’s not eating much and losing weight quickly.

I’m not sure when the Memorial service for my grandfather will be yet.

Continue praying for my grandma and my Dad’s family.

Thanksgiving 2010

November 27th, 2010

This year was different in how we spent our holiday weekend.

Our plans a month ago: Don’t go anywhere, have just us and maybe somebody from church for Thanksgiving dinner, relax the rest of the weekend, maybe get a bit more Christmas shopping done, but not during Black Friday.

A week ago, my aunt sent out an e-mail that my Grandma (Dad’s mom) wasn’t doing well, so plans got changed.

Our plans a week ago: Have my sister and her kids come up on Wednesday and spend the night on their way to my aunt’s house, Thanksgiving with just the seven of us, relax on Friday, go to my aunt’s house on Saturday and see my parents and whoever else would be there.

Then on Monday, my grandfather (Dad’s dad) was hospitalized for a major heart attack he’d had on Saturday. Tests were done this last week to determine how bad he was. He’s got a lot of blockages, but his health is not well enough to be able to do surgery.

Also, as we were getting shoes and coats ready so we could go out one day, we found some kids with shoes too small and I need a new winter coat.

How this holiday weekend turned out: My sister and kids came up on Wednesday and spent the night before leaving for my aunt’s house on Thursday. We had Thanksgiving dinner just the seven of us (with a fire roasted turkey… there was a small grease fire in our oven. It was taken care of quickly and easily and didn’t hurt any of our food or our oven.) We went to my aunt’s house on Friday because more people were there to visit with on that day. Some we only saw for a few minutes or a couple hours, but it was nice to see them. Today will be spent going shopping for shoes, a coat for me, and maybe some Christmas presents.

Please pray for my grandparents and for my Dad’s family.

Chocoloholic’s No-Bake Chocolate Cheesecake

November 23rd, 2010

*This is a repost, but I thought some of my new readers might like to try this recipe that I came up with, modified from a no-bake chocolate cheesecake recipe I found. It’s one of my favorites.*

Pour most of a 12 oz bag of semi-sweet chocolate chips into a microwave safe bowl. Leave about an inch or so in the bottom of the bag. Take two chips out and eat them. Mix up in a seperate bowl 12 oz of softened cream cheese, a full stick of softened butter, half a cup of sugar, and 2 tsp of vanilla. Eat two chips. Melt chocolate chips in bowl, stirring often. Eat two chips. Pour melted chocolate into cream cheese mixture. Thoroughly stir in chocolate, when resting hands grab a chip or two to help with your energy. Mix 8 oz of whipped cream into the bowl. Thoroughly mix in cream, doing as before when hands are sore. Pour into two 8 in circular graham cracker crusts in pie pans. Lick bowl. Put cheesecakes in refrigerator to chill. Check chocolate chip bag. Pull out last little chip in bottom corner. Throw bag away. Wait three hours. Eat one full cheesecake. Wait a day. Eat the other.

*Since writing this, I have also found that this tastes good with a shortbread or chocolate crumb crust and now I usually add a bit more whipped cream to the mixture than specified to make it a bit creamier. I hope you enjoy my recipe.*

Let’s Give Daddy Some Quiet, We’ll have Chaos

November 3rd, 2010

Jeremy’s been seeming a bit overwhelmed lately and I left him with the kids twice. Once to go on my Mommy Vacation and once to go down and help my sister and brother-in-law when they had the baby. I talked to him and we decided he needed some time to himself. So… the kids and I headed off to visit my friends in South Dakota. Why them? Because I love it there and they have 5 kids whom my children were eager to meet.

So… Thursday came and we packed up the van and took off that afternoon. We drove halfway there and stopped for the night in a hotel and then drove the rest of the way on Friday morning, arriving at their house just after noon. Since most of the kids were in school, my children got to meet Michelle and little Bina first. Noelle and Bina seemed to get along fairly well and played with little princess dolls for most of the afternoon. Once the kids came home, it was crazy. Michelle kicked them out of the house because the weather was awesome for October and they could make all the noise they wanted there. After a little bit, Patrick came home also and the kids came inside. Poor guy, Michelle and I left him with all 10 kids by himself. We went out to do some grocery shopping. It was good to walk around and talk while filling up two grocery carts.

On Saturday, we took the kids to the Nature Center. They had a class for the little kids in the morning and a class for the older kids in the afternoon. In between the two times, we went over to where Patrick works and had lunch and he showed them some medical stuff that he uses to teach his students. Christine loved that part the most. She really wants to be a doctor when she grows up.

On Sunday, they went to Mass, but my kids and I stayed at their home and had our own little Bible Study and singing time. After lunch, the kids put on their costumes. We had Tinkerbell, Spidergirl, a Fairy Princess, Anakin Skywalker (I think), a Doctor, Iron Man’s sidekick or whatever he is, a Mad Scientist, an Egyptian Princess, and a Baroque Princess. First, Michelle and I took the kids and headed to the Courthouse Museum for their free activity stuff. Then we came back and had a little rest before we took the kids trick or treating around the neighborhood. After dinner, Patrick and I took the kids (minus Noelle who was worn out and decided to stay with Michelle) over to his parents’ house and we joined up with his family to go trick or treating in that neighborhood. I think there were 16 kids in all in that group. After a quick stop at his parents’ house for drinks for the kids and a little rest, we headed home and put kids to bed.

On Monday, their children had school. We stayed around the house during the morning while Michelle did some running around. After lunch, we took my kids and Bina over to the Falls and let them run around and play on the rocks and roll down the hills. I hope that one of my pics that I took of the kids while there came out well enough to use for my Christmas cards. They seemed to really enjoy the time out there. After school was out, the kids all ran around playing with each other under my supervision while Michelle and Patrick went to Parent/Teacher conferences. They did really well and I didn’t have anything to really worry about except for cleaning up the mess they made with candy wrappers after a small raid they made on the Halloween supply.

On Tuesday, we all got up early and they headed to school while we headed out to travel home. We got home around supper time and we were very glad to see Jeremy again. I think he was glad to see us as well and have a noisy house once more. They all enjoyed telling him about their weekend. I think he enjoyed his quiet time, working from home, but missed us a lot. It’s good to be all together.

So, that was what happened to us for our last weekend in November. It was crazy and chaotic and fun for the kids and me. It was quiet and calm and relaxing for Jeremy.

I Have A Teenager…

October 23rd, 2010

Last week, Amie had her birthday and hit the teen years.

Wow… I don’t think I’m old enough to have a teenager.

We had a friend come up and visit for the weekend and we enjoyed having him up here. For the day of her birthday, she opted to go out with just me. We went and got lunch and then she picked out an outfit from Old Navy (Her favorite clothing store). Then we came home and had BBQ pulled pork sandwiches for dinner with brownies for her dessert of choice. On Sunday, I took her for ice cream after youth. She’s still waiting on her birthday present and she wants to cut her hair for Locks of Love again. I’m hoping to get both of those taken care of this week.

*sigh* The world of teens has started for me. It won’t end for another 13 years.

New Nephew!

October 8th, 2010

My sister, Jill, finally had her baby! On Sunday night, as Jeremy and I were finishing up Youth Group, I got a phone call. “I’m at the hospital, walking around. They’ll tell me in an hour if I’m going to stay.” I knew the next phone call would be telling me she was staying. I got home, packed my bag, and waited for the next phone call. It actually came an hour and a half later. “We’re going to have a baby!” AND I was off… driving 5 hours down to St Louis.

I was glad to have a good speaker phone on my cell. I talked a lot on my way down. I called different friends who I knew would be up late and talked and talked. Plus, Jill and Rob would call and give me updates. At 1am, I was still an hour away from the hospital, but I got the phone call… “It’s a boy!”

I got to the hospital at 2am and met the proud Daddy at the nursery window. Baby I was laying right there. He was so little… 6lb, 10oz. Wow! I stayed out there and talked to Rob a while, letting Jill have some rest. After a bit, we went into the room and I gave her a hug. They brought baby in and he ate and then Auntie Julie enjoyed some early morning cuddles.

I left the hospital around 5am on Monday morning, grabbed some food, and went to the house. I got about an hour of sleep before the other kids woke me up. T, N, and B were all surprised to see me there. B wasn’t sure what to think… Mommy and Daddy were gone and Auntie Julie was there. He was a bit hesitant around me, but after breakfast, he was okay. Rob’s mom was there and after I made sure the kids had food, she let me get a few more hours of sleep. After I woke up, I took the kids to the hospital to meet their new brother. It was very cute watching them. After we left the hospital, we had lunch and then I kind of supervised the kids from the couch while they played. I was pretty exhausted. Rob came home and helped me get dinner and put the kids to bed and I went to bed fairly early that night myself.

The next day, Tuesday, I got the kids up, they ate, got dressed, and we took off for the St Louis zoo. We spent most of the day there. It was a lot of fun. We got home about two hours before Rob, Jill, and baby arrived home. The kids were so excited that their baby brother was coming home that they played out in the front yard the whole two hours, waiting for them.

On Wednesday, I took care of the the kids and let Jill rest as much as I could. The kids kept wanting to see Mommy or help with the baby. I don’t blame them. Baby had a Dr’s appointment around B’s naptime and the girls wanted to stay with their new brother, so Jill took them with her while B and I tried to nap. “Tried” is the word… B did NOT nap. He sang and sang and then talked and talked and then started crying. I got him out and read him books for a bit.

That evening, after Rob got home to help, I left and met my best friend, Michelle. We had dinner and then drove around just talking and talking. We had a Starbucks stop and sat outside talking until they started turning off the lights. We finally went our own ways a little before midnight. I headed back to Jill’s house and got a bit of sleep before the baby woke me up crying. I’d told her I would help out so she could sleep. She nursed him and then I kept him inbetween feedings. I got some sleep in there too.

On Thursday morning, when Jill took the baby for his early morning feeding, I got my bags repacked up and left… driving home. Jeremy had a meeting he had to be at for work in the early afternoon, so I needed to get home so he could go in. My kids were lovely and let me have a nice nap after I got home and then we talked about their cousins, especially the new one. Now we need to figure out a time to bring them all down to meet him.

BTW, James is a very happy boy since there is another boy in the family. LoL

Other Birthdays

September 27th, 2010

AnnaBeth turned 8 earlier this month. She got a nerf gun and we had a battle here at the house. It was a lot of fun.

Christine will be 10 tomorrow. She wants to get her ears pierced, so I guess I’ll be taking her to get that done. She wants fajitas for her dinner. I haven’t heard about what she wants for dessert yet. I need to know so I can buy what is needed for it.

Still waiting to see when my new niece or nephew will be born.

Happy Birthday to Me…

September 24th, 2010

*sigh* It was yesterday…

I talked to my sister a bit. Mom and Dad called and talked to me and gave me some gorgeous earrings they found in Hawaii. Also, my brother called and told me about being on the local news when a black bear ran down his street. I got a bunch of greetings on Facebook and a few on Twitter. That was nice.

That’s about it…

South Dakota Pictures

September 17th, 2010

I edited and posted 80 of my pictures from my trip to Sioux Falls, SD. You can find them on Facebook in the album “Sioux Falls, SD trip” or you can go to my Flickr account and see them there. I took the most pictures when we went to the Falls Park.

Mommy Vacation

September 14th, 2010

Yesterday, I got home from my own personal vacation. I needed it. I went to visit some friends of mine in Sioux Falls, SD. Patrick and Michelle have five children of their own and we had a lot of fun while I was there.

I flew out early Thursday evening. Patrick and the kids picked me up from the airport. The kids had made me a cute welcome poster. Patrick got a big hug and I was tested on if I knew which kids were which. I passed with flying colors.

On Friday, Patrick and the four older kids had school, so I had time to get to spend with just Michelle and Bina (3 yrs old). We went to the mall and let Bina play around. Then we got pizza and met Patrick at work for lunch. (and I was actually a bit quiet as I was still kind of getting to know Michelle.) She needed to go to the eye doctor for a little bit, so she dropped me with Bina off at the mall. We walked around the mall looking at the clothes, commenting on the ones we liked. After a bit, she seemed slightly bored and was doing some funny little steps, so I copied her. It became a game of follow the leader with her being the leader and changing the way we would walk (hop, sashay, itty bitty steps). After a bit, she started walking around and around a big column in the mall and so we had a game of hide-n-seek around that one column. One of us would count on one side of it and the other would hide on the other side of it. *laugh* For a 3 yr old, it’s a great game of hide-n-seek. Michelle picked us up and we went and got three of the kids and she dropped me off at the house so I could nap a bit while they went to the oldest’s volleyball game. I was exhausted from travel, excitement, and a 3 yr old. That night, after the kids were asleep, Patrick and Michelle taught me how to play the card game, Munchkin. I was laughing so much, I had tears in my eyes.

Saturday, we traveled around to different parks. First, Devil’s Gulch. Second, The Palisades. Third, The Falls (You know… what Sioux Falls is named after….) While at the Falls, we got on a trolley and took a small tour around the town. That was kind of nice. We had a picnic after that. Hard to really explain much here… you all will have to wait until I get my pictures edited and up. Patrick and I are directors and actors in a series on YouTube called The Experiment: WIP and we headed out to do some filming for it on Saturday night. We did about 8 films in 3 hours using 2 small digital video cameras, including one vid where I had to slap him.

On Sunday, I went to Mass with them. It was my first time attending a Catholic church and I found the service very interesting. Most of the rest of the day was sitting around talking. In the afternoon, I went out with the kids and took pictures while they played on the swingset. After it was dark, we took a walk. It was nice being able to see the stars again. It’s so hard to see them here in the big city… too many lights. I love their little city.

Monday, I woke up early enough to see the kids and Patrick before they headed off to school and told them goodbye. Michelle and Bina took me to the airport and I flew home.

I am going to miss them. I wish we lived closer. I hope they don’t mind if I use their house as a place to go and get away again, but first… I’m planning on bringing Jeremy and my kids so they can meet everyone.
